Chinese Wedding Tea Ceremony | A Modern Multicultural Celebration

Some weddings stay with you because they are beautiful.
Others stay with you because they are meaningful.

This wedding was both.

I have photographed a Chinese wedding tea ceremony before, but this was the first time I was able to capture the full tradition — including the playful games before the ceremony itself.

The Chinese Wedding Door Games

Before the groom was allowed to meet his bride, the bridesmaids had other plans.

One of the most joyful Chinese wedding traditions is the “door games” — where the groom must complete a series of challenges set by the bridal party before he earns the right to see his bride.

There was laughter, negotiation, teasing and plenty of competitive spirit. The bridesmaids took their role very seriously — setting tasks that tested everything from endurance to loyalty.

It was playful, energetic and completely filled with personality. Photographing this part of the day felt like stepping into a hidden chapter of the wedding story — one that many guests never see.

And when he finally passed the tests and was allowed to enter? The atmosphere shifted instantly from laughter to emotion.

Chinese Wedding Tea Ceremony

The Chinese wedding tea ceremony itself was intimate, respectful and deeply meaningful.

The couple served tea to their elders as a gesture of gratitude and respect — a moment rich in symbolism and tradition. There is something incredibly moving about the stillness of a tea ceremony after the excitement of the door games.

The colours, the intricate garments, the exchange of gifts — every detail carried meaning.

As a photographer, it was such an honour to document both the vibrancy and the reverence of this tradition.

A Timeless Wedding Dress

Becky looked effortlessly elegant in a timeless strapless gown with soft layers of tulle that moved beautifully with every step. The delicate volume of the skirt added a sense of romance without overwhelming her frame, and her classic veil caught the light perfectly in the manor’s chandelier-lit rooms. The simplicity of her silhouette felt modern yet refined — the kind of dress that will look just as beautiful decades from now.

We took time for relaxed bridal portraits inside the manor, making the most of the ornate fireplaces, gilded mirrors and soft, natural light that flooded the rooms. The setting complemented her dress so perfectly — understated luxury against historic textures. Outside, the gardens offered a completely different feel, with ivy-covered walls, manicured hedges and even the resident peahens wandering through the grounds. The result was a collection of portraits that felt both editorial and romantic, balancing elegance with a sense of quiet intimacy.

The Ceremony Room & Florals

The ceremony space was effortlessly romantic — a light-filled garden room draped in soft, flowing fabric that caught the sunlight and created the most beautiful, diffused glow. Rows of natural wooden cross-back chairs lined the stone aisle, leading to an intimate floral installation that felt organic and sculptural rather than overly styled.

The florals were a refined palette of creamy whites and soft blush roses, layered with textured green hydrangeas and trailing amaranthus. Arranged in stone and woven vessels, they felt both contemporary and timeless — a perfect balance of elegance and natural movement. The aisle meadows softened the stone floor, creating a garden-like feel beneath the canopy of draped fabric.

Every detail felt thoughtful yet unfussy — understated luxury at its best.

A Formal Wedding Ceremony

Following the tea ceremony, the couple held a beautifully styled formal ceremony.

The blend of cultural heritage and contemporary styling made the entire day feel layered and personal.

Why I Love Photographing Chinese Wedding Traditions

What made this wedding so special wasn’t just how beautiful it was — it was how intentional every part of it felt.

– Playful door games full of energy
– A deeply meaningful tea ceremony
– A modern formal celebration
– Cultural traditions woven into a contemporary wedding day

Photographing a Chinese wedding tea ceremony requires sensitivity, anticipation and an understanding of the flow of events — from high-energy moments to quiet, emotional exchanges.

This day was a reminder of how powerful it is when couples honour their heritage while celebrating their future.
