ENGAGEMENT, INSPIRATION

Light and Airy Engagement Photos

If you have been dreaming of light and airy engagement photos there are a few things to consider. First things first!  Hire a great photographer that specialises in this fine art style.

Location

location, location, location! look for white, light stone walls. I love when couples choose a location for their session that complements their wedding. Elegant manor houses are often the perfect location for this reason.

Light

I love to begin sessions about two hours before sunset. I prefer to shoot when the sun is lower in the sky to avoid harsh shadows and bright sun patches. However, if you are morning people, the first two hours after sunrise is also an ideal time to shoot.

Engagement Outfits

When choosing your outfits think light neutral colours, this helps create those soft pastel tones.

Ladies: Lace and tulle look amazing in photographs. Depending on your location, you might want to consider a fit and flare or a flowy dress! These dresses look great when you walk and move about. Choose an outfit you feel comfortable in, but don’t be afraid to dress up! Heels lengthen legs but if your heels aren’t comfortable for walking, bring an extra pair of shoes to slip into in between shots. Consider carrying a small hand tied floral bouquet, these are lovely to add a romantic touch to your images and add context to your date!

Gentlemen: You can’t go wrong with a sports jacket/blazer, it gives a real elevated feel to the look of your images. Consider pulling out that suit you had to wear last time you were a groomsmen! Be careful not to choose a pattern that is too small – it may accidentally make your photo look a little too busy. The guys normally choose a sports jacket, shirt and chinos for the smarter look and jeans and shirt for the more casual look. Cozy sweaters layered over button ups are a great way to stay warm and stylish during the cooler months.

Hair & Makeup

Professional hair and makeup make a world of a difference. It allows you to relax, feel beautiful and be confident. Nothing like a set of lashes to bring out your inner model. Consider using this time as a test run with your makeup artist and use your session to evaluate your wedding day look and how it photographs. If you are unsure what style of makeup to wear simply ask your makeup artist for a natural more polished version of yourself.

Manicure

There will probably be times during your session when we’re shooting your hands holding or the engagement ring on your hand – which means it’s a good idea to clean up your nails before your session (this applies to the guys too!).

The Ring

When I can, I always try to take a photo of your ring during your engagement session – so it’s a good idea to have it cleaned or clean it yourself before your shoot! To clean at home, soak your ring in warm water with dishwashing soap for 20 to 40 minutes. Then gently brush the stone with a soft toothbrush, rinse and repeat if needed.

That’s it! I hope you enjoyed reading these tips! Engagement sessions are a chance for me to capture the moments that tell your story and illustrate the love you share. They allow me to connect with you prior to your wedding, practice in front of the camera and share the experience of being photographed to help you feel more comfortable on your big day, making your wedding photographs even more successful.
