10 Reasons to hire a professional makeup artist for your wedding day

Hello! Many of my brides ask me if they should hire a professional makeup artist for their wedding day? The way I look at it is this... you have said 'yes' to the wedding dress of your dreams and booked the perfect wedding venue for a party to remember! You have hired me, a professional wedding photographer so once you've had your mani/pedi done the final key ingredient to your 'glam squad' has to be a professional makeup artist!

I recently worked with Biha Rose on a styled shoot for a wedding magazine. Biha is a MAC qualified, freelance professional makeup artist and works in Glamour, Theatrical and Bridal makeup. She is also a professionally qualified spray tanner working in the industry for 6 years. We got together to come up with 10 reasons why hiring a makeup artist is the best decision you will make!

1. A professional makeup artist will make you look and feel your best for your special day. They understand harsh lighting and flash photography and use the best products to ensure the photographs that are captured make you look a million dollars.

2. Many brides head to the makeup counter prior to their big day and purchase a vast amount of super products to highlight and enhance their features. These can be costly and often never used again as they are not your every day makeup items. With a professional their makeup kit is full of the best and most advanced products all the time.

3. If you consider arranging a bridal makeup trial, start a Pinterest board of inspirational makeup shots, dress colour, colour scheme and a photo of yourself. This is recommended so when it comes to the trial, Biha can recommend and discuss what will be best suited to you and your theme.

4. When buying new products you are not always able to test them first and sometimes they can cause outbreaks and allergies, which needs to be avoided closer to the wedding. Biha highly recommends a trial where you’d discuss the 'perfect look' for your big day and making sure that the finished look is exactly how you would like it to look. Photographs are also taken to ensure you are happy with your makeup.

5. Your dress is perfect but what size handbag will you take to fit all these products in for the day itself?? With a professional you will only need to worry about carrying a lipstick and possibly some powder. Professionals use fixing sprays and setting powders that will ensure you stay looking glamorous for the whole day and night.

6. Wedding days can be stressful. We cannot think of a better way to sit back and relax with some of your favorite tunes playing whilst a professional makeup artist looks after you and your bride tribe. Nerves can get the better of you and there is nothing worse than shaky hands trying to apply false eyelashes!

7. Your bridal party can all have a similar look to compliment your chosen colour palette and wedding theme, but also to complement their own features. This is a great way to get your bridesmaids and the mother of the Bride/Groom made to feel fabulous and pampered.

8. Having a spray tan? It is vital you do not go overboard on this. Badly applied self tans look harsh under flash photography and can look extremely uncomplimentary to your dress, so a spray tan trial is also recommended before the makeup trial to ensure the colour match is perfect for the day.

9. If your not 100% confident in doing makeup, you will learn a lot in the process from a professional. You can learn new trends, pick up tips and tricks and you’ll feel more confident for the future!

10. Your wedding photography becomes an Heirloom you pass down through generations - You should look and feel amazing when you look back at your memories.

Prepare your wedding day look

Finally in preparation for your big day, Biha suggests the following to prepare your skin

1. MOISTURISE! It’s key for your skin to be looking and feeling the best in the lead up to your wedding. Find a moisturizer that works well with your skin and use it daily.

2. Stay hydrated – water is the best ingredient for your skin to look healthy, glowing and spot free!

3. Do not have any waxing/threading treatments done right before the wedding. Prepping for these treatments should be done at least 1 week before your big day, incase of rash, irritation or redness.
