Newton Beach Engagement Session

Barefoot walks beside the water, windswept dunes and the kind of laughter that never needed to be prompted: Charlotte and Sam’s Newton Beach engagement session felt relaxed, natural and unmistakably them.

Located near Porthcawl on the South Wales coast, Newton Beach is one of my favourite places to photograph engagement sessions. The open shoreline, soft sand and surrounding dunes provide plenty of variety without taking couples away from the easy, unhurried atmosphere that makes a beach session feel so special.

For Charlotte and Sam, it created the perfect setting for photographs that feel editorial yet completely effortless.

A relaxed beach engagement session in South Wales

We began the session with a walk through the dunes, giving Charlotte and Sam time to settle into being in front of the camera.

This is one of the reasons I rarely begin an engagement session with formal portraits. Walking, talking and exploring the location together helps everything feel more natural. Instead of concentrating on where to put their hands or whether they are standing correctly, couples can simply focus on one another.

Charlotte and Sam brought such a lovely, playful energy to the session. Whether they were walking hand in hand, laughing beside the water or pausing for a quieter portrait, nothing felt overly directed.

Two outfits, two different sides of the session

Charlotte and Sam chose two coordinated outfits, which gave their Newton Beach engagement photographs two distinct moods.

Their first outfits were relaxed and understated, with a palette of soft neutrals. These worked beautifully among the textured dunes and suited the more candid, documentary-style part of the session.

For their second look, Charlotte wore a flowing white dress while Sam chose a blue linen shirt with light trousers. The soft fabric moved beautifully in the coastal breeze and brought a more refined, editorial feeling to the photographs on the shoreline.

The blue, white and neutral palette complemented the colours of the sea and sand without appearing overly matched. It is a wonderful example of how to coordinate engagement-session outfits while still allowing each person to retain their individual style.

Late afternoon and early evening generally provide softer light, although the exact starting time will depend on the season, tide and weather conditions.
